How to Get Paid Faster and Reduce Bad Debt
Getting paid faster starts before the sale, not after the invoice is late. Put the right systems in place early, and late payments become far less common. Here’s what businesses can do to speed up payment and reduce bad debt.
Five Ways to Speed Up Payment and Reduce Bad Debt
- Screen customers before extending credit. A quick credit check or trade reference call before you extend net terms can save you from chasing a bad account later. This matters most for new commercial customers or larger orders.
- Put payment terms in writing — and make them clear. Spell out due dates, late fees, and accepted payment methods on every invoice and contract. Don’t assume customers already know them. Ambiguity is one of the most common excuses for late payment.
- Invoice immediately, not “when you get around to it.” The sooner you send an invoice, the sooner the clock starts. It also keeps the work fresh in the customer’s mind. Batch-invoicing at the end of the month adds weeks of unnecessary delay.
- Offer more than one way to pay. Customers who must mail a check tend to pay late. Customers who can pay online, by card, or via ACH pay faster. Removing friction from the payment process removes a common excuse.
- Consider a small early-payment incentive. A 1-2% discount for payment within 10 days often costs less than the time and risk of chasing a 60-day-old balance. It also rewards your best customers for paying promptly.
- Know when to stop chasing and start escalating. If an account is 60-90 days past due with no response or broken promises to pay, stop calling. Continuing rarely changes the outcome. That’s the point to bring in a professional collection agency before the balance becomes uncollectible.
